Literacy

At Hetton School we are committed to improving the literacy levels of every single student. We are committed to this because we know that improved reading ages and literacy levels will lead to higher grades in all subjects, as well as improving how well our students can cope in the world outside of school, making them more knowledgeable and more employable as they leave us.

As well as giving all of our students the opportunity to read during tutor-time and some lesson times, we encourage further literacy outside of school through library-based and online Reading-at-Home schemes. We measure the reading ages of our students every term to assess the impact of our reading approaches, and to identify any students who may be falling behind with their reading levels so that we can offer extra, personalised reading support.

Hetton School really is a reading school – and watch this space for our whole-school writing initiatives which will be coming soon!
