Change of Leadership

After over 6 years of leading Hetton School as Headteacher, Mr Keay has explained his decision to voluntarily leave his post as Headteacher of Hetton School to seek a new professional challenge elsewhere, to parents, carers, staff, governors at the school and to the council. In letters to students and parents on Wednesday he states,

“Over the past few months, I have come to the difficult decision to resign as Headteacher. My decision is not because of the students or staff of Hetton School – I love being in school every day and will miss this. I am in my tenth year as a Headteacher and, for me, it is time for a change. I thank the Governors for the support they have given me. Our new building is the start of the next phase for Hetton School. Thank you for your support in working together with the School, always in the best interests of our young people.”

In accepting his resignation the board of governors has asked Deputy Headteacher, Mr Craig Knowles to become Acting Headteacher until such a time as a permanent Headteacher can be appointed. Chair of governors, Margaret Young states,

“We have complete faith that Mr Knowles and the existing Senior Leadership Team have the capacity to continue the excellent progress begun under Mr Keay. We will continue to provide support to the senior leadership team and Acting Headteacher, Mr Knowles, who has served as Deputy Headteacher for six years, to ensure continuity during this transitional period for everyone at the school.”

Mr Knowles’s first task as Acting Headteacher was to inform the students of the change, including the words,

“Although Mr Keay’s resignation will come as a shock to you, I want to offer my assurance that as Acting Headteacher my focus will remain on putting you first. You will see little change in your day to day education and your fantastic teachers will help to ensure that it is business as usual. As a school our expectations remain the same. We expect you to: Respect yourselves, each other and the staff of the school; challenge yourselves to Learn to the best of your ability; and strive to Achieve the very best you can in every stage of your school life. I will work tirelessly to help you achieve these things and I will always be ready to listen if there is anything that we can change to improve your life chances.”
