in partnership with Seaham School of Technology and City of Sunderland College has established a brand new shared sixth form, named Headways, located at the City of Sunderland College campus called the Bede Centre.  All of our young people who join Hetton School will now get a seamless education from 11 to 18.  The Head Teachers of the two Secondary Schools, Mr Keay for Hetton School and Mr Shield for Seaham School are Associate Principals of the Sixth Form and have appointed John Rushworth as the Head of Sixth Form.

Headways Sixth Form offers both an academic route via A-levels and also a vocational route via BTEC Diplomas.  For A-levels, there are 35 subjects available including:

For the vocational route, the sixth form offers BTEC Diplomas, at a range of levels, in the following:

The achievement of students’ in 2009/10 was outstanding as demonstrated by

Applied Medical Science Business Customer Service and Retail
Childcare Health and Social Care ICT
Sport Studies    
  • 99% average pass rate in both A-level subjects and Vocational Courses
  • 883 students to University in October 2010, a 24% increase from the previous year
  • an outstanding OFSTED Report in March 2010 where the Inspectors stated that the “quality of teaching was excellent”
  • top of the City of Sunderland A-level league table 2009 as shown on the DFE Website
